Oxdisc summer league: August 19

About 8 more weeks to go and George has a pretty solid lead. Not only has he played lots, but if you look at his averages over time, he's the only player consistently improving each year. Dave looks good, but hasn't got enough rounds under his belt. Steve could take the lead if he could just get a few good rounds in.

As for my performance this year? Even worse than last year... Did anyone find my mojo somewhere? I must have left it at a tournament a few years back!

On Wednesday evening we had five beginners come for a round of disc golf! Along with some 'regulars' Andy, Ben & George - we were able to split into two groups of four so things didn't get too chaotic.

The final scores were :

* Pablo has been coming along for a few weeks and been improving greatly!

It's an absolute pleasure to have new players along - it's great seeing people throw a frisbee further than they ever thought they could! Also, spending an evening wandering around a park can never be bad!

Over the years - we have amassed a large number of discs that we can lend to new players, so all you have to do is turn up and we'll have you throwing frisbees into trees, bushes & ditches in no time. Just let us know beforehand so we can pack some extra discs for you!

Oxdisc at Essex

Chris - Int. Ams. winner

Three oxdisc-ers (Andy, Ben & Chris) went to the Essex Open this weekend.

Chris stormed the Int. Ams with a consistent set of good rounds. His six hole final didn't go so well - though a comfortable lead and awesome caddies (Andy and Ben) meant he still came out on top.

Ben was playing rubbish disc golf, throwing the cornerstone of his game (a 'perfect' roc) into a lake after 4 holes. Andy got a birdie on some hole and then; umm… other things happened.

The whole weekend was a lot of fun. Good chats, beer and disc golf. We're unlikely to make the next tournament (on the isle of Mull) - so it's back to the oxdisc summer league till June!

So you want to know more about disc golf? Well, here's a video from a couple of years back that gives you more info on the sport:

In Oxford we play on Sundays throughout the year. We tee off at 10am, so get there about 10 minutes early. During summertime, we also play on Wednesdays, teeing off at 6.30pm. If you want to come and try it out, email Andy (andy.cotgreave@gmail.com) beforehand to be sure someone will be there, and so we can bring some spare discs for you to try out. We meet in Headington Hill car park.

If you get keen, there's a UK tour and plenty of other courses around the UK. Quarry Park in Leamington Spa is the best disc golf facility in the UK, and only just up the road.

It's the summer of 2009. Already, Oxford's Summer League is on the go. Three weeks in, and only George has managed to make anything near a decent score. Last year's winner, Steve, is on a slow start.

Your summer league organiser, Andy, is about to have a second child (not me, my wife!). And so, we've gone very hi-tech this year.

Scores are entered by players via a Google form, which feeds into a Google Spreadsheet. The details to the right of this page will update automatically as the scores are added. Cool, huh?

What's new? I added a "current average" score to the dashboard - we can see how we're doing against our pars. And the bad news is that only Jonny is managing to improve his par so far this year! And he's still wayyyy ahead. Although Steve's going through a purple patch and could easily catch up. C'mon Steve!

Andy and Neal both got some big blips at the "high" end of their score profiles thanks to some horrendous rain last Sunday. Keeping discs dry was next to impossible, and any kind of grip was hard to come by. Not pleasant!

We have started the 2008 summer league. Same rules as last year:

Every round you play in SP or HH throughout British Summer time counts.
Your top 5 scores in each park count to your final Summer League score.
Any rounds played on a Sunday or Wednesday are eligible.
There must be at least two Summer League players in a round for it to count.
Get the scores to Andy

Andy is time-poor so the updates to the blog and league scores may be a little slower than last year.

I can tell you that Jonny is already on fire once again....

With a mere four or five weeks of golf left to play, things are getting interesting at the top.

George and Andy are a little way behind, and Jonny can only score with some monster rounds.

That leaves Steve to chase Warren. Both will be fresh from the experience at Hayling Hurricane and both could take the trophy.

The next few weeks should be exciting....

After what seems like months, Jonny's top spot is taken over by newcomer Warren. Congrats.

Jonny's got to work hard to get any more points after a blinding start to the summer but the rest of us have room for improvement, most particularly Warren: he's now our boy to beat.

With impending father-dom, I thought I would write some words for a change.

Scores are up to date as of today, 5th July.

Jonny still leads, but George, Steve and Neal are all advancing steadily on him. Newcomer Warren will only need to improve a little bit before his averages start plummeting...

If you click on the "all scores" link at the top, you can get to see all your rounds. I've changed this so its ordered in reverse date order, so it's easier to find a particular date.

I don't think it's quite the biggest development of internet technology, but you will notice I have now embedded the scores into the blog, so no more clicking around or downloading huge Access databases.

I have also copied ALL the scores to the main sheet, so click here to go the full Google spreadsheet.

You'll notice that Jonny's running away with it, but it is now harder and harder for him to get scoring rounds. YOu'll also see that I have added the "worst" column: this is your worst scoring summer league round.

Jonny starts the league on fire. Already on -12 with only 4 rounds played: that's 3 under his pars each time he's stepped onto the course.

Everyone else seems to have started averagely, with a couple of decent rounds and a duffer too.

Can Jonny maintain this pace? If so, he'll soon be on minus 30, leaving the rest of us the summer to claw back with some good rounds. For Jonny to go beyond -30 will be something special: that'll require a couple of 4 -under par rounds at least.

First wednesday done, and four players get out. Jonny, Andy and George snuck in a swift round of HH before Pete joined and we all started SP, but bad light stopped play. It'll be a few weeks before we can safely play full rounds in the evenings!

It's over!

A great last day's play saw six of us out to see the end of the league. The arrival of Travis ensured that some cash was wagered on the rounds, just to make things more interesting.

And the weather! It was roasting. A wonderful end to the day.

In two weeks, it all comes to an end. Next week, it looks like Oxdisc are heading en masse to Quarry Park, which means that Sunday 29th is the last chance for anyone to change places.

Looks like Jonny has it wrapped up. George is pretty safe, but two good rounds from Neal could changes things around. Likewise, a good show from me and I can sneak third place.

Only three weeks to go, and George goes and posts his greatest SP round - a massive 35. PB and it equals the best round this summer in South Park. Nice one.

That draws him three points closer to Jonny with only three Sundays left; that's just six or seven more rounds for George to go for it.

A shocking pair of rounds for me. 44 in Headington Hill and in South Park.

Terrible! How would I love to blame the squally weather, the rain, the state of my discs, the muddy tees, the bad etiquette of the others, the snappy dogs, the moving trees, the fog, my bad cold, my false leg, the enhanced gravity, or the crowds of people grabbing my discs and moving them.

No, it was all down to me being rubbish. I can't even blame the mojitos I drank last night. It was just plain poor.

Oxdisc player does well out of town, shock!

No golf for me, this weekend, I was up at Burnlaw where I reaped the rewards of much golf over the summer and an absurd amount of putting practise in my back garden.

I came second in the Ams! Yay! And what was great was that I came to the end of the tourny and could look back on four rounds + a final and only identify a handful of duff shots, so it was a pretty satisfying result.

Great course and venue, too. Lots of fun.

Meanwhile, South Park and Headington kept people happy at home. George is solidifying his number two spot, and has been playing some good golf in the last couple of weeks. Not sure I'll be able to catch him, but I'll see what I can do!

No more summer :-(

George and I struggled in fading light tonight to finish a round by 7.30. That's it then, no more golf on a Wednesday evening. Not that can count for the summer league, anyway.

But what a round we had. Mainly because it became a wonderful example of psychology. I led early, but stumbled a little in the middle. George played well and steadily, and after hole 10 on HH was on par. A fine position to be in.

On the 11th tee (easiest hole in the park?) he mentioned how great a two would be. Because that would set up the final hole (the hardest) well, and give him the cushion of an easy ride on the last hole to still get a good score. Fair enough - it's a fine statement, but really, don't say such things when you're stood on a tee!

The first bit went well enough. The drive on the 11th went very well, and George set up for an easy 2, which he got, to put him one under on the 12th tee. It's all going to plan.

Only to see him drive into a tree about 15 foot from the tee on the 12th. I have never seen anyone hit that tree, and you couldn't really throw a shorter drive. The next shot was no better, ending up in a ditch with no view of the hole. Third shot? A roller which started well but turned away from the hole and ended up behind a huge oak. Fourth shot was great, and he took an acceptable, but OH SO FRUSTRATING five for a 37. 37 is still great, but the lesson is: NEVER verbalise what you're thinking. You curse it!

Anyway, I'm back from holiday. Thanks to Jonny for taking the helm while I was away. George's 37 has done him some good, but Neal can easily pip him. Here's the standings:

Hello everyone and sorry for the lack of posts over the past week or so. I have moved house and amazingly Orange are unable to reconnect my home broadband for 2 to 3 weeks! Surely it just involves changing one setting somewhere! Very tedious.

So anyway I'm doing this from work, having first reassembled my home PC to update the database. Quite a few scores to add in, and I am pleased to say that most people have made some progress. I'm also unhappy to say that I haven't! )-:

There's a real scrap on for 2nd place with George and Neal currently level on -22. Steve has also had a useful score or two and could well nip in front of Mike and start to challenge Andy with another decent round. Bud, Pete, Dean - come on guys! Time to step up a gear! Not much time left....

A very windy pair of rounds

Very challenging today but great fun. Given the conditions, an excellent 37 from Mr Tilton in South Park was clearly the round of the day. However, in terms of the league check out Dr Graneau in the ascendance! Neal's 40 in Headington Hill toady earning him a very handy three points.

It should be noted that the table below incldes three rounds of Neals which were not included in my last post. Also Pete I have had to change the two scores you gave me verbally for Sunday 27/8 as they were slightly different to Neal's recorded scores for you (of SP49 & HH52).

With September around the corner, Wednesday nights are going to end. As soon as the 6.30 round is unplayable, 5.30 rounds will also not count.

I announced that the summer league would end when the clocks go back. That is Sunday October 29th. I think I had said that the last eligible weekend would be the weekend before, but I hereby announce that the last eligible rounds will be on October 29th, followed by lunch and prize giving.

Get everyone out for that event!

Next year, the Summer league will reappear, tweaked and improved. New rule ideas:
1. The top ten scores must include five scores from each park
2. Summer league will last only as long as Wednesday rounds are viable
3. Have a separate par for each course (although this wouldn't change scores if we require five from each park).
4. Readjust pars halfway through the summer
5. ???? got any ideas? let me know.

First off, look at Neal! Suddenly he's found himself in third. A cracking start to his round yesterday saw his first three drives within very "gettable" distances to the pin. One birdy out of the three and a boost in confidence saw him go on to a great round.

So, what can we see from the numbers? First of all, there's a huge discrepancy between South Park and Headington Hill average scores - we are all between one and three shots better in HH than SP. Next year, on Steve's suggestion, we'll change the league to ensure the top ten must include five scores from each course.

Only Jonny and Neal have overall averages that are lower than their par. Does that mean we set the par too high, or they're playing really well? It's the latter, surely.This tally may be interesting though:

What does this show? This is the percentage difference of a player's average away from their par.It means that Andy and Steve's averages are the furthest away from their par, but the people at the top of the league are closest to their par. (if we do the same stats on those with less than 10 rounds, the deviation gets pretty huge).

Conclusion? I think the pars were, on the whole, well calculated.

What's the story? George takes a solid hold onto second place, and Neal rises above Andy. Steve is pushing Andy close, and Bud's slowly approaching us all, too.

Me? Well, I've been bloody awful since the British Open. I haven't shot under 40 since then, and today was truly appalling. My putting and approaching has fallen to pieces, and my drives aren't much cop either. Hum ho.

Steve hit a 40 yard approach shot on HH1 which was v nice, and George played some great golf to pull back a 2 shot deficit in South Park to win that round. Solid putting from a long way away saw off Neal's lead. Not a lot you can do against someone hitting the pin consistently from 30ft.

What can we see from this?
From the bottom, Pete's the only still in positive scores. C'mon Pete, less swearing, more accuracy!

Bud's finally penetrated the zero. (that sounds rude, and I'm sure I could come up with something facetious to add to it)

In the middle, not a lot to say.

But, near the top, George has taken equal second, and with no Mike around, George is sure to move into a solid second place.

And Jonny, well, another couple of great rounds see him flying ahead.

As for me, well, I feel like I am in a slump. I can't putt for toffee. Someone needs to tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Andy was away yesterday. While he wallowed on a train and in a faceless corporate hotel in Leeds, golf carried in little old Oxford.

Something of a bonanza today as 12 players show for Mike's farewell do. Kudos to Dean, too, for bringing out his cousin, another new player! And also to Pete and Sharon for coming out from Aylesbury - always good to have more players playing our lovely courses.

What's the highlight? Well, there's two. Steve gets 38 in Headington Hill, a PB, and a significant -5 points for the league.

And Jonny gets 34 in Headington Hill, and *still* describes it as "disappointing" - apparently he missed some easy putts. How cruel this sport is, to leave us unhappy with a whopping five below one's handicap. But, a 32 would have been something pretty special.

The link at the top of the blog now downloads the latest Access database - no longer a spreadsheet. Download and open it, you can run various queries, the names of which, I hope, are relatively self-explanatory. Over the next week or so, I hope to give this a proper interface so that it makes sense. But, for the time being, if you're in desparate need of the numbers, this is the best I can do, I'm afraid.

Post-tourny lack of talent

Last weekend was the British Open, so no action in the summer league as we focussed on that. With some success, no less!

But, come Wednesday, it's all eyes back on the summer league. We welcomed along Jeff, another new player, for the second week. And I suffered from post-tourney blues. Misdirected drives, missed putts, generally all a bit poor, and a weak arm didn't help.

A blistering roller on SP11 did make the round feel good though. My drive was way behind the trees that block the entrance the flat plateau. Mike suggested a roller. Well, why not have a go, the round's blown anyway. And what do you know, it went all the way to the hole. Nice.

Others had good rounds though, and now the league's getting tight.

When I took my shoes off.

Yesterday was hot. How hot? When I took my Teva sandals off at the end of the round, bits of the sandal has melted off onto my feet. Let me tell you know, the smell and the look did not go down well with Liz!

Along with the hot weather, there was some hot play. Not from me, though, I am stuck in the World of Average at the moment. South Park saw the good action, though. Bud fluffed up SP6, triple putting and carding a six.

"That's the last of him this round," we all thought. But his tournament experience showed and over the next six holes he got three birdies to level it with George and Mike after 12 holes. One play off later saw Mike take the final victory.

Welcome too to Jeff from Colorado. He told me he wasn't too hot, but then proceeded to launch his first drive with a crisp snap and send it a long way towards the hole. We'll have to watch him!

In nerdy news, I am moving the league over from the spreadsheet to a database. Better for pulling out meaningless numbers and easier to maintain. Should be ready next week. But it will make this kind of thing easy:

Golf is best in the summer

This morning was the first time it really really felt like 'proper' summer. Sure, we've had sunshine, and plenty of warm temperatures in the last few months. We've had many days that required shorts and t-shirts. Days that made us sweat out on the course.

But today, the warmth felt that bit more settled. A day where you don't really notice the fact that it's sunny, because it just is. As we move through July and into August, this is the point at which the season establishes itself, and we relax into the warm days.

What does this mean for golf? Better scores all round for most, and a gentle breeze that assists rather than annoys. Today, I started well (how many 2's do you see on SP1?!), and then played averagely for the rest of the round.

Why am I still awake? Well, I've been doing work, can you believe it?

Before a late night money-making session, there was golf. New people, new faces, and a gorgeous summer night. A slight breeze helped the discs go that extra yard and everyone managed some pretty spectacular drives on holes here and there.

The summer league score table is getting a bit hectic now that there are lots of players, but I hope you still find it managable.

The scores (there is a glitch somewhere: Mike is on -13, but for some reason the table in the sheet shows him as -12. It's too late to try and debug it now...!):

Headline: Ace no. 3 of the summer.

And this time, it was me! Finally, an ace on Giggsy (so named because there's a big 11 painted on the tree).

It's a hole I have doggedly thrown my beat-up JLS at, knowing that the right-fade of the disc will sink it right into the tree. Most times, something goes wrong: height, distance, release, and it misses. But today, in a strong wind, it all came right. Thwack - 3 feet up, into the trunk. Very satisfying indeed.

Inevitably, I then double-bogied the following hole.

In other news, George had two potentially great rounds. But he got an OB6 at hole 12 on South Park, the wind carrying the drive over the trees and beyond the railings. In Headington Hill a great start was wrecked by a huge overput on the 4th. Into a hedge, close to OB that left him no choice but to declare an unplayable lie and card a 7. Ouch.

Steve got into double figures on SP11 - 10 shots to get in the basket. An utter disaster.

The wind was very challenging today, but made for some great excitement.

Cor blimey!
Things are getting a little tighter. As we all push our averages down, we're all in the negative or heading towards it.

Great night tonight: the weather broke, but we were spared the downpour that began when we finished.

Personally, another average-feeling round that came in 2-below. Always nice, particularly a huge shot on the final hole to recover from a shocking drive. Definitely the biggest intentionally-thrown double-helix I have ever managed, and it landed pretty much where I wanted it to.

I finally broke my jinx on our Theatre-toilet hole, too. Having always managed to throw it into the rough and end up with a four, a good drive and great putt finally saw a 2.

Enough about me.... Mike nearly aced HH11 again, and did a comedy jig as it sailed past.

Download the spreadsheet (link above) and you'll see that finally, I made it into a negative score: as league organiser, I feel it should be mandatory that I end up with a good score. If not, then surely it's a failure that I didn't skew the rules in my favour enough.

I had a great second round in HH tonight. Nothing special, really, but nothing went wrong. Steady and with a couple of good twos. I recovered from a horrendous drive on HH12 with a lovely second shot, S-bending past the big trees and tracking alongside the path-side trees to make for a safe finish. That felt nice.

As did a 67-pace approach on SP10. Throw. Bang. Hit the tree.

Enough of me, the night belonged to Steve. HH11. Throw.

The longest day....
And it felt pretty long for me. OB5 on Railing Bank. Bud drove first, and we all were convinced it was OB. I then did something pretty similar, obviously inspired by Bud's display. The gutting thing is, his disc turned out to not be OB, but mine was. Grrr.

For me, it was a night of letting go of the disc at the wrong time on every drive. Too early, too late, it shot all over the place.

Bud shot a lovely 36. But was the putt on the last hole, for a 3, a falling putt? We think it was, but only Mike saw it. Let off this time, Bud!

Here's this week's action (almost: I'm missing the final round's play).

Great rounds from Jonny and Mike. Jonny got a 35, using only a Comet, on Headington Hill, which is ridiculously good. He also had a relatively easy putt on SP12 for a 35, but blew it and double putted. Still, even double-putting gave him a round of 37 which is no bad thing.

The rest of us were inconsistent!
